My History with Colored Pencil
by Amy Lindenberger
Colored pencil is a relatively new fine art
medium, when compared with oils, watercolors,
etc. The Colored Pencil Society of America has
increased the popularity of the medium many
times over since it first began in 1990.
However, I've been working with colored
pencil for more than thirty years, and teaching
classes on their usage for more than a quarter
century!

History of The Linden Tree
In 1985, I opened The Linden Tree Fine Art
Studio in North Canton, OH, offering adult
drawing classes, a program of drawing
instruction for children and teens ages 5 – 17,
and special focus workshops in drawing
and colored pencil techniques. The Linden
Tree became known for its
high quality instructional standards
and supportive, common-sense
teaching methods.

Colored Pencil Explorations:
The Colors of White

Dates:  Sat., Jan. 21, 28
(snow date: Feb. 4)
Time:10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Objective: To be able to accurately
capture the subtle nuances of color
found in nature's range of whites by
combining colored pencil and
watercolor pencil.
Prerequisites:
Botanical Drawing I, Colored Pencil I
Fee:$ 120 members; $160
non-members
Location: Phipps Garden Center in
Mellon Park

In this course we will examine the
variety of whites nature offers to us in
her palette. White flowers and berries
can be some of the most difficult to
portray, due to the very delicate nature
of their coloring, which those new to
studying the various whites will often
perceive as gray. Students will quickly
see that using grays to tone their white
subjects will only serve to deaden and
destroy the inherent subtleties which
are the key to their beauty. We will
focus on simple color perception and
identification techniques and then
practice the necessary skills to be able
to render these subtleties realistically.

gained in Colored Pencil I.
Prerequisites: Botanical Drawing I
and II, Colored Pencil I
Fee: $ 180 members; $220

Location: Phipps Garden Center in
Mellon Park

Building on the foundation of colored
pencil techniques and layering principles
begun in Colored Pencil I, this course
focuses on more advanced layering and
blending techniques to create a variety
of surface textures, exercises to
continue to improve color perception
skills, and more advanced color theory,
including understanding hue, value,
intensity and temperature.
