Develop a Working Knowledge of the Principles of Light and Shadow
A One-Day Workshop with Amy Lindenberger, CPSA Saturday, January 15, 9:30 – 4:30 At The Main Street Lesson Center 1664 N. Main St. North Canton OH 44720
In the course of teaching colored pencil classes to botanical illustration students at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about a subject that, previously, I really knew very little about. One of the things I’ve gleaned from teaching these classes is that while botanical artists and illustrators do put great emphasis on direct observation of their chosen subject, they also have a strong foundation in certain artistic “conventions”: a memorized base of knowledge about a certain aspect of art that gives them guidance in situations where their chosen specimen may change with time, or – if working from photographs – the photograph doesn’t provide them all the information they need. I have come to see where this can be a tremendous advantage to a student and a beneficial tool for artists of all disciplines.
This is part of an ongoing series of workshops I began offering in 2010, designed to help students consider new approaches to subject matter, composition, scale, working surfaces, and techniques – all of the things that go into making art. In this particular workshop, we will focus on developing an understanding of the basic principles of light, shadow, reflected light, transparency, and refraction, to enhance students’ perception of these qualities of light and increase their understanding of how to best use those qualities in a two-dimensional drawing to convey a sense of depth and modeling to their forms.
The workshop will be held Saturday, January 15, from 9:30 – 4:30 (Students should bring a sack lunch, or plan to purchase a quick lunch someplace nearby.)
The cost of the workshop is $95. To register, return the form below with a minimum $50.00 deposit (balance of $45.00 to be paid the day of the workshop). Seating is limited to 15 students so sign up early! Return registration and check (sorry, no credit cards) made payable to Amy Lindenberger, to 5729 Glyn Dr. NW, North Canton, OH 44720. A supply list and further information will be furnished upon registration. If you have questions, I can be reached via email at AmyLTree@yahoo.com or by phone at 330-309-7353.
