The content of our artwork is much more than just the subject matter we select; to quote artist Gerald Brommer, it is “the meaningful substance of the work”. It goes beyond subject matter to include concept, point of view, mood, scale, medium and the way we use that medium. It also includes composition, a word that sometimes sends artists running for cover, bringing to mind frightening terms like “the golden mean” and “dynamic point” and not-so-fond memories of lessons from an art history class.

This is one of several workshops I will offer, designed to help students consider new approaches to subject matter, composition, scale, working surfaces, and techniques – all of the things that go into making art. In this particular workshop, we will focus on how we go about choosing our subject matter, and how to prepare to present that subject matter in the most successful way. My goal is to try to distill the vast amount of information available on these topics into their prime components, to give students a working system for selecting an idea and developing it into artwork that is unique to them.

The workshop will be held over one-and-a-half days: a short session on Friday, April 23, from 6 – 9 pm, and a full day on Saturday, April 24, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. (Students should bring a sack lunch.) At 2:30 on Saturday, students have the option of staying to participate in a critique session (for an extra $15 fee), where each student may bring in a drawing they are working on (not related to the workshop) for my critique and suggestions.

The cost of the workshop is $110. To register, return the form below with a minimum $55.00 deposit (balance of $55.00 to be paid the first day of the workshop). Seating is limited to 15 students so sign up early! Return registration and check (sorry, no credit cards) made payable to Amy Lindenberger, to 5729 Glyn Dr. NW, North Canton, OH  44720. A supply list and further information will be furnished upon registration. If you have questions, I can be reached via email at AmyLTree@yahoo.com or by phone at 330-309-7353.
